Elizabeth Barnes is a dual US / Canadian citizen who has lived and worked in Vancouver, BC for the past 12 years. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and her Masters of Fine Arts in studio practices from the University of North Carolina. Over the years, Barnes’ work has evolved through an immersion in the seductive nature of paint and through her interest in the history of painting. Throughout her work, Elizabeth Barnes explores the ways in which the contemporary world is becoming increasingly controlled through a network of systems. Pattern and repetition can represent a variety of systems, from data structure and weather patterns, to architecture or design. We live our lives within a myriad of shifting rhythms. Looking for interconnections within these systems, Barnes offers the viewer a path to considering the complexity of the present moment. Playing with systems of colour alongside pattern and repetition, we see patterns emerging as forces within her paintings. Drawing from her own experience, Barnes allows for an ongoing engagement with the tenuous nature of our shared and interconnected experience. Elizabeth Barnes currently teaches in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and Canada and is held in both private and public collections in North America and in Europe.
