Jan Smith is a Canadian artist who graduated from NSCAD in 1981 with a BFA in printmaking. While living in Seattle, WA., she began working in the field of Art Jewelry. As many contemporary artists she is allowing the term jewelry to be interpreted in its broadest sense by creating pieces which are rather sculptural or wall pieces. The pieces involve a dialogue between the artist, jewelry, wearer or viewer. The objects are created from both precious and non precious materials including enamel, silver, copper, gold, felt, acrylic plastic, resin and steel. The colors and patterns of botanical objects, flowers, stones, quilts and textiles influence the mark making and surface patterns. Jan exhibits with galleries in Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Montreal and has taken part in numerous exhibitions in North America and Europe.
